This year alone, as many as five million patients will require blood transfusions. The Red Cross is asking residents to celebrate 2008 with a donation during National Volunteer Blood Donor month.

While the winter holidays have ended, the need for volunteer blood donors still exists. Traditionally winter is a difficult time to collect blood due to inclement weather and illness. Make a New Year's resolution to become a lifesaving blood donor - one donation could save the lives of up to three people.

A community blood drive is being held Tuesday at Sallisaw First United Methodist Church, located at 2100 McGee Dr., next to the Lion's Club Park walking trail. The blood drive will begin at 2:30 p.m. and continue through 6:30 p.m. Walk-in donors are welcome, or call 1-800-GIVE LIFE to schedule an appointment. Those with appointments will be given priority.

"More than ever, we need to pull together and help save the lives of family members, friends, neighbors and colleagues," Delisa English, Red Cross Southwest Region-Oklahoma chief executive officer, said. "There's no better time to donate than during National Blood Donor Month. Make a New Year's resolution to celebrate 2008 and donate."

Those who wish to donate are asked to bring their donor card or photo identification. Donors must be in general good health, weigh 110 pounds or more, and be at least 17 years old.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
