Three county residents were arrested in connection with the New Year's Eve robbery of a Sallisaw truck stop, whose clerk was robbed at gunpoint. The Sallisaw truck stop was the fourth business in the county to be robbed in recent weeks. Muldrow and Sallisaw Police investigations are still underway in a string of convenience store robberies believed to have been perpetrated by the same suspect. See story on page A1.

Carl Dean Porter II, 18, of Muldrow, Marcia Hensley, 28, of Sallisaw, and a 16-year-old male were arrested for their part in the New Year's Eve robbery, which resulted in the theft of about $880.

According to the incident report, Sallisaw Police Officer John Weber reported that at about 8:17 p.m. Dec. 31 he was dispatched to Ed's Truck Stop on east Cherokee in reference to an armed robbery.

The clerk told Weber that she was robbed at gunpoint. She described the suspect as a slender white male with blondish hair who was over six feet tall, wearing a hooded T-shirt, baggy jeans and a blue bandanna.

A passerby told police that he spotted a man matching the suspect's description get into a black Chevrolet Blazer near the truck stop. The vehicle was occupied by a driver and at least one passenger, the passerby told police.

Weber reported that the victim told him that she observed the suspect in the store and had a conversation with him. She then went back to the register area and began to fix the money bags for the next shift. The suspect then approached the counter with a drink and told the clerk to "give me the money." The clerk told police that she initially laughed at the suspect, at which time he pulled a gun and demanded money again, according to the police report. The suspect allegedly told the clerk not to do anything else or he would shoot her. She threw him a bundle of $20 bills, but the suspect demanded more money. The clerk told police that she tried to talk to the suspect, but the more she talked the more aggressive the suspect became. The suspect then took the money and ran out the door.

A witness in the store told police that she went into the store to take her nephew to the restroom. When they were leaving the restroom, the witness said that she saw a tall white male standing at the register. She said the cashier had a scared look on her face and the suspect seemed to be talking quietly to her. The witness then saw the suspect run out the door, and the clerk then yelled that she had been robbed. The witness described the suspect to be about 17 years old, wearing a black jacket, black pants and a blue bandanna.

Muldrow Police officers were monitoring traffic and stopped a vehicle, occupied by a driver and two passengers, matching the description. One of the passengers matched the description of the robbery suspect.

Sallisaw Police Detective Sandra Girdner reported that she and Detective Jeff Murray made contact at Muldrow with the officers. Porter, Hensley and a 4-year-old and a 16-year old were in the vehicle. Porter allegedly matched the description given by witnesses, Girdner reported.

Porter initially told police that he knew nothing, but then said that he did rob the business for a black male. Hensley told police that she knew nothing, but her 4-year-old daughter said that Porter had a lot of money and gave it to her, which Hensley denied. The 16-year-old said that he just picked up his friend, Porter, and that he knew nothing about a robbery or money.

Later Hensley reportedly began crying and started handing money to police, saying that she didn't want it and that she didn't want to lose her child, Girdner reported. Porter told police that he gave the money to Hensley and that he had a pellet gun and that he threw it at the store in Sallisaw and he handed the money off to the other juvenile. The juvenile maintained that he didn't know anything, however, as he was transported to Sallisaw and exited the patrol vehicle, money began falling out of his pants leg, Girdner reported.

All three were arrested and taken to the Sallisaw Police Department. The 4-year-old child was released to the custody of her father. The 16-year-old was placed in the custody of the Oklahoma Juvenile Authority.

This is not the first time Porter has been arrested in an alleged criminal act. He was arrested earlier this year for the burglary of several Muldrow businesses.
