A Sallisaw man and his girlfriend were arrested Saturday evening in connection with the shooting of a Vian man, who suffered a shotgun wound to the chest.

Jackie Don Leroy McGarrah, 36, and Christina Marie Haggard, 26, both of Sallisaw were arrested and booked into the Sallisaw City Jail. The two were later transferred to the Sequoyah County Jail in Sallisaw. McGarrah was booked in on charges of shooting with intent to kill and being a felon in possession of a firearm, all after former conviction of two felonies. Tuesday evening he was being held on no bond. Haggard was booked in on charges of accessory to a shooting with intent to kill and being a felon in possession of a firearm, all after former conviction of a felony. She is being held on a $60,000.

In December 2005, McGarrah was bound over for trial on two counts of first-degree rape. He is accused of sexually assaulting a seven-year-old relative in March 2005 in his home south of Sallisaw. Those charges are still pending, court records indicate.

In the Saturday incident, McGarrah is accused of shooting 25-year-old Shawn Lloyd Hankley at McGarrah's Sallisaw home on South Elm Street in Sallisaw. Hankley was shot when he allegedly attempted to get McGarrah to pay him from a methamphetamine deal, police reported.

According to a police report, Sallisaw Police Officer Wendel Hughes was dispatched to Sequoyah Memorial Hospital in Sallisaw at about 5:14 p.m. Saturday in reference to a gunshot wound. Hankley told Hughes that his girlfriend, Melissa Smith, had the shooter's identification.

Smith told Hughes that she did not know the man who shot Hankley, but described what he looked like. She then handed Hughes a driver's license belonging to McGarrah, telling Hughes that the man in the photo was the man who shot Hankley, but his hair was longer now.

Smith told police that Hankley and McGarrah's girlfriend, later identified as Haggard, had an argument prior to the shooting.

Smith described where the shooting took place, telling Hughes that a green Chevrolet Camaro and a white truck were parked in front of the home.

Hughes reported that he and another officer met at McGarrah's home, but no one was there. At that time, Hughes notified surrounding agencies to be on the lookout for the Camaro, which wasn't parked at the home.

At about 6 p.m., Sequoyah County Sheriff's deputies apprehended McGarrah and Haggard at McCoy Ford Road north of Sallisaw.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
