Keith Wasson, town administrator, said last week that the town received a resignation letter from Smith, who last month was reinstated to her position as assistant chief. According to the meeting agenda, it was indicated that Smith will not be returning to her previous position with the police department, which makes her separation from the town final.
Wasson said Smith did not give a reason for her resignation.
In other police matters, the town council approved various pay increases and promotions, including appointing David Goode to the rank of sergeant with a pay increase of $1,040; approving a pay increase of $1 for Bobby Dean; promoting Ronnie Howard to full-time status at $10 per hour; and hiring Aaron Cagle to the police department.
The council also accepted the resignation of Erny Nowaczynski, town mechanic, and hired Ron Real as his replacement, Wasson indicated.
The council approved Jacob Lenington's application for admission to the volunteer fire department; approved an amendment to the building code ordinance to include mini storage facilities; and gave Wasson permission to look for a new sanitation truck for the town. Wasson said the truck should cost between $120,000 and $130,000.
In other business, Wasson said the council discussed raising the speed limit on Taylor Road to 35 miles per hour, but ultimately decided to leave the limit at 25 miles per hour due to concerns about safety.
At a special town council meeting on Jan. 7, the council heard the appeals of police officers Jeremy Day and Jerry Foley, who were fired in November. Wasson said the board voted 3 to 2 that Day and Foley's employment should remain terminated.
