The Sallisaw Lady Diamonds used a tough defensive effort and balanced scoring to notch a 54-29 win over Vian on Tuesday night in the first round of the Armstrong Bank Sequoyah County Tournament at Paul Post Fieldhouse.

Sallisaw has held nine of its 10 opponents to less than 40 points this season and the Lady Diamonds did it again on Tuesday by holding Vian without a field goal until early in the second period.

Sallisaw already had a double-digit lead by that point and the Lady Diamonds went on to clinch a spot in Thursday's semifinals against Muldrow.

Sophomore post player Sarah Snider was the lone player to reach double figures, pumping in 12 points to lead Sallisaw. Meghan Smith, Heather McCawley, Lyndsey Daggs and Caitlin Hall each scored eight, Candace McNamee four, Sasha Risnhoover four and Ashley Covington two.

Vian (1-3) was paced by Tara Smith with nine points. Alyx Sovo added six, Meghan Wells five, Jessica Brunson three and Lacy Brown, Ashley Hooper and Chelsea Stewart two each.

The Lady Wolverines were scheduled to play in the consolation bracket on Wednesday afternoon, taking on Gans.

Sallisaw improved to 7-3 with the victory. The Lady Diamonds opened the contest with a 14-1 run and extended their lead to 29-12 by halftime.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
