A blood drive will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Nov. 21 at Sequoyah Memorial Hospital in Sallisaw.

The drive will be conducted by United Blood Services of Fort Smith, Ark.

Helen McGraw, R.N., who is coordinating the drive, said, "You can make your holiday shopping list, check it twice and save someone's life at the same time by giving blood."

McGraw encouraged area residents, neighbors and co-workers to "Take a load off your feet and start your holiday planning while donating blood at our Sallisaw blood drive Nov. 21. The blood drive will replenish our local blood supply and stock hospitals' shelves for the upcoming holiday season."

Tammy Moreland, United Blood Services community relations representative, said, "We encourage people to donate once more before the end of the year, before they get too busy with holiday plans."

Moreland said, "Traditionally, the nation's blood supply is very tight during the holidays. The people of Sallisaw can help assure that a blood shortage does not occur this year."

The blood drive comes at a critical time, Moreland said. Blood can be stored for only 42 days and the blood that is donated now will save the lives of patients who are in the hospital or receiving medical treatments during the holiday season.

"Can you think of giving someone any better holiday gift?" Moreland asked.

To make an appointment to donate call Moreland at 1-800-934-9415. Volunteer blood doors must be at least 17, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
