A Roland man was recently sentenced to five years in prison after pleading no contest to a felony count of domestic abuse by strangulation.

Thomas Wesley Hurst, 41, entered the plea on Jan. 18. He was sentenced to five years in prison, with credit for all time served in the county jail. His sentence will be served concurrently with two other felonies and the state of Arkansas's application to revoke probation, according to court records.

Hurst was charged in April with the felony, along with two misdemeanor counts of domestic abuse assault and battery, stemming from a November 2005 incident at an apartment complex in Roland. The misdemeanor charges against Hurst were dismissed.

According to court records, the victim, who lived with Hurst along with the couple's children, told police that she asked Hurst to help with the children and the cleaning, but Hurst instead began calling her names and cursing at her. The incident escalated, and the victim told police that Hurst chased her into a bedroom, threw her up against a wall, and pinned her down. Hurst allegedly than placed his right forearm on her forehead and nose and began pushing until the victim felt something crack.

When the victim showed submission to Hurst, he let her go, she told police. The victim said Hurst continued to curse the children and call the names, which caused them to cry. Hurst also allegedly kicked the victim in her side onto the floor and then kicked her between the legs. The victim reported she then went to the bedroom to sleep.

The next day, on Nov. 27, 2005, the victim reported that she again asked Hurst to help with the cleaning and children. Hurst allegedly went into the bedroom where the victim was and kicked her in the stomach. She said that she fell to the floor, and Hurst kept yelling at her that he would crack her nose again.

The victim told police that she tried to get Hurst to leave, but he refused. The victim said that she was on the phone with Hurst's mother, trying to get help, when Hurst placed his hands around her throat and began strangling her.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
