Sallisaw handed Poteau a rare conference loss on Tuesday night as Dustin Edgmon sank two pressure-packed free throws to give the Black Diamonds a 62-60 triumph at Paul Post Fieldhouse.
Edgmon, a junior post player, led Sallisaw with 20 points and provided the winning margin when he was fouled with :03 left and sank both free throws. The clutch shots broke a 60-60 deadlock and allowed the Diamonds to fight off a furious Poteau rally.
The visiting Pirates came to Sallisaw with just one loss (at Roland) in NOAA action, but fell behind early as the Diamonds opened the game with a dominant first quarter.
Sallisaw outscored Poteau 26-7 in the first eight minutes and maintained a double-digit lead into the third quarter before the Pirates stormed back into contention. Poteau surged in front at 58-54 with just under three minutes remaining after putting together a 12-2 run.
Sallisaw fought off that challenge, though, to improve to 9-7 overall and 3-3 in the NOAA. Poteau slipped to 5-2 in the conference and 13-5 overall.
Senior Dan McHenry joined Edgmon in double figures with 16 points for Sallisaw, while junior guard Trevor Teel scored another 10. Sam Tehee and Trent Whitekiller added eight apiece.
Poteau got a game-high 22 points from Casey Hemphill and 16 from Lance Sconyers.
Poteau 45, Sallisaw 38 (Girls)
A sharp-shooting performance from Julie Wilson carried Poteau past the Lady Diamonds on Tuesday night at Paul Post Fieldhouse in Sallisaw.
Wilson scored a game-high 18 points on six three-point baskets as Poteau moved to 12-7 overall and 3-4 in the conference.
The Lady Diamonds dropped to 4-10 and 1-5 despite 12 points from senior Whitney Hall. Ashley Covington added eight, Meghan Smith six, LaShawna Fields five, Heather McCawley three, Morgan Thomason two and Lyndsey Daggs two.
Roland 73, Stilwell 51 (Boys)
ROLAND - Stilwell played the Rangers evenly in the first and fourth quarters, but the middle two periods belonged to Roland on Tuesday night at Carl Matlock Fieldhouse.
Robert Thompson, Tony Brown and Brandon Lewis all scored in double figures for Roland as the Rangers cruised to a comfortable win over the Indians. Roland opened up some breathing room in the second quarter to lead by 10 at halftime and then broke the game open with a 24-12 surge in the third period.
Thompson led all scorers with 18 points while Brown had another 16 and Lewis 12. Nick Mooney added seven points for the Rangers, Wes Just six, Dwight Williams five, Jamelle Youngblood three, Andrew Crow two, Heath Matlock two and Coty Biles two.
Stilwell got 10 points from Jarrod Vanderheiden.
Roland moved to 16-2 overall with the win and stayed in first place of the NOAA with a 6-1 conference record.
Stilwell 63, Roland 61 (Girls)
ROLAND - Jamie Johnson scored off an offensive rebound with six seconds remaining to lift Stilwell past the Lady Rangers on Tuesday night.
The NOAA victory moved Stilwell to 12-5 on the season, but the Lady Indians had to overcome a sensational effort from Roland sophomore Katie Beshoner, who scored a game-high 32 points.
Roland led 28-22 at halftime, but was unable to hang on to the lead as Stilwell got 13 points apiece from Jill Garcia and Kadi Gilstrap.
Muldrow 60, Spiro 51 (Girls)
MULDROW - Junior post Mashiah Akin scored 12 points and two other Muldrow players added 10 each as the Lady Bulldogs ran their record to 14-5 with a homecourt win.
Chelsy Chapman and Courtney Waters both reached double figures with 10 points for the Lady Bulldogs. Katrina Proctor added eight, Abby Daniel seven, Amber Walker seven, Fallen Tate four, Kendra Click two and Nema Chunestudy one.
Spiro was led by Natasha Shoate's 28 points.
Spiro 70, Muldrow 61 (Boys)
MULDROW - Junior Sublet poured in 22 points to guide Spiro to a Tuesday night road win at the Muldrow Activities Center.
Muldrow got off to a good start by scoring the first nine points of the game and taking a 19-13 lead into the second quarter. Spiro (12-5) fought back with a 21-9 run in the second period to seize the lead.
Muldrow slipped to 6-12, despite 22 points from Jeremy Collins. Caleb Cawhorn bucketed 14, Trevor Earls 11, Brandon Cardwell six, Bill Spann 4, Chris Waters two and Jeremy Brown two.
Gore 51, Boynton 46 (Girls)
GORE - Senior Lacy Taylor scored 10 points for Gore as the Lady Pirates collected their fifth win of the season in Big Eight Conference action Tuesday night.
The Lady Pirates also got nine points apiece from Whitney Mannon and Brooke Montgomery while knocking off Boynton.
The visiting Lady Cardinals were paced by a game-high 25 points from Shana Youngblood.
Boynton 64, Gore 57 (Boys)
GORE - The Pirates took a surprise lead over Class B No. 2-ranked Boynton at halftime, but saw the Cardinals rally for the win with a big second half on Tuesday night.
Boynton outscored the hosts 41-30 in the third and fourth quarters while improving to 16-2 overall and 7-1 in the Big Eight Conference.
Gore had three players in double figures: Josh Caudle with 19 points, Jordan Burris 16 and Jordan Andrews with 11. Boynton was led by Martin Lang's 19.
Vian 43, Central 27 (Boys)
VIAN - The Wolverines completed a three-game season sweep of Central as Vfastv Locust and Londell Taylor both scored in double figures on Tuesday night.
Locust netted 14 points and Taylor had 13 as Vian moved to 10-9 on the season. Central was led by 10 points from Skyler Rogers.
