The candidates for municipal elections filed their candidacies Monday through Wednesday at the Sequoyah County Election Board.

In some municipal races, only one candidate filed to seek that office, and they will automatically take that office since they have no opponent.

Sallisaw's municipal election will be held March 1. Other municipal elections, in Gore and Vian, will be held April 5.

In Gore's Ward 2, the candidates are Chris M. Keathley, Michael C. Kinnear and the incumbent, Shawna Chapman.

In Gore's Ward 4 the candidates are Pat Sanders, the incumbent Belinda Madding, and Eric M. Cope.

For Gore town clerk, Charles 'Bud' Baker was the only candidate to file and will automatically take office. His name will not appear on the ballot.

For Gore town treasurer the candidates are Linda Box and Randy Foley.

Candidates for Vian offices are: Ward 2 - Shirley Ann Hutchinson and Jim Lewis, the incumbent; Ward 4 - Vic Harris, the incumbent, and Delmar R. Shoults; town clerk and treasurer - Sharon Digennaro, the incumbent. Digennaro will automatically take office and her name will not be on the ballot.

Shannon Vann, the incumbent Sallisaw mayor, was the only candidate to file for that position and will retain the mayor's office. His name will also not be on the ballot.

Three candidates filed for the Sallisaw police chief post: Tom Ysbrand, a retired Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper; Gary Philpot, the incumbent; and Shaloa Edwards, a Van Buren, Ark., police officer who is from Sallisaw.

In Muldrow the three incumbents were the only candidates to file for the three posts open and will be automatically returned to office. They are: Ward 2 - Carl W. Fugett, Ward 4 - Catherine B. Jones, and clerk-treasurer - Larry Edwards. Consequently, there will be no election in Muldrow.

In Roland the two incumbents were the only candidates to file for the offices and they will retain their positions. They are Ward 2 - J.R. Crowson, and Ward 4 - W.C. Helms. Again, because only one candidate filed for the office, there will be no election in Roland.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
