TALIHINA - A fourth-quarter dry spell doomed Gore on Thursday afternoon as the Lady Pirates suffered a 54-44 loss to Haworth in the consolation bracket of the Class 2A Area IV tournament.

Gore had trailed by as many as nine points before whittling the deficit to 42-41 on Amanda Hunt's three-point play with 6:38 left in the game. From that point on, Haworth held the Lady Pirates without a field goal until the final five seconds and went on a 12-1 run to move into the second-round of the area playoffs.

The Lady Lions were scheduled to meet Panama, a 53-38 winner over Warner, on Friday afternoon. Gore ended its season at 16-10.

Hunt led the Lady Pirates with 15 points and eight rebounds in her final game for Gore. Lacy Taylor added 14 points, Whitney Mannon nine and Bethany Dotson six. Dotson also grabbed eight rebounds.

Haworth was paced by 16 points from Kayla Flemings and 12 from Amanda Hendricks. Shawna Fields added eight points plus a game-high 16 rebounds.

Taylor hit three shots from three-point range, including two in the first half. Her second pulled Gore within 29-25 late in the second quarter, but Haworth responded with a trey of its own to grab a seven-point halftime lead.

Hunt scored three times from inside the lane to keep Gore close during the third period and her turnaround jumper at the buzzer pulled the Lady Pirates within 42-38.

She added two more baskets during the fourth quarter, but they were the only ones for Gore, which shot 2-of-14 over the final eight minutes.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
