EDMOND - Sallisaw put two wrestlers in the finals and crowned one champion this past weekend at the Deer Creek Invitational.
Josh Hume won the championship of the 112-pound weight class on Saturday to lead the Diamonds to a sixth-place finish in the team standings.
Hume, a defending state finalist, continued an outstanding start to his junior season by topping Derek Gibbs of Chickasha in the championship bout. He earned an 8-5 decision against Gibbs, who is ranked No. 8 in Class 4A.
The other Sallisaw finalist was Seth Cox, who suffered his first loss of the season in the title bout of the 130-pound weight class. He was pinned by Chickasha's Jeremy Spoon, the top-ranked wrestler in Class 4A, in the second period.
Spoon was one of six individual champions for Chickasha, which won the meet with 258 points. Deer Creek came in second with 186 points and was followed by Perkins, Piedmont and Prattville, Ala., in the top five. Sallisaw was next with 120 team points.
Five other Diamond wrestlers placed at the tournament in addition to Hume and Cox. Blaine Teague, Cash Vaughan, Randy Johnson, Jordan Simonds and Colt Sanders earned team points for Sallisaw by placing in the top six of their respective weight classes.
Sanders, a sophomore 145-pounder, came in third place. He pinned Prattville's Paul Nipper at the 3:54 mark to end on a winning note at Deer Creek.
Vaughan came in fourth place after a setback against Prattville's David Carmichael in Saturday's third-place bout at 119 pounds.
Teague and Johnson both captured fifth place for Sallisaw. Teague, a freshman 103-pounder, decisioned Lexington's Orrin Holman 12-6 in his final match.
Sophomore 135-pounder Johnson took fifth by pinning Kyle Naifeh of Bishop McGuinness with 44 seconds left in their match.
Simonds, a freshman 140-pounder, came in sixth after losing to Chickasha's Tim Smith.
The Sallisaw varsity will wrestle one more dual before the holiday break. The Diamonds host Omulgee on Thursday night at Paul Post Fieldhouse.
