Roland Teams Win NEO Titles

MIAMI - The Roland Rangers secured their second tournament championship of the month on Saturday with a 30-point romp over Glenpool.

The Rangers capped an undefeated run in the Blue Bracket of the NEO High School Basketball Tournament by cruising to a 64-34 win against the Warriors. The victory was Roland's third in three days at the round-robin tournament and lifted their record to 14-1. Roland had previously won the Sequoyah County Tournament earlier in January.

Against Glenpool, the Rangers jumped out to a 16-4 lead after eight minutes and continued to pull away. They led by 19 points at halftime and 22 after three quarters.

Junior Robert Thompson led the way with a game-high 19 points. Roland teammates Nick Mooney and Coty Biles joined him in double figures with 13 and 10, respectively.

Glenpool was led in scoring by Mark Hill with 10 points.

Roland had opened the NEO tourney with a 66-41 win over Wagoner on Thursday and then followed that with their closest triumph, a 47-41 win over Miami on Friday.

Against Miami, Mooney pumped in 16 points to pace the Rangers, Thompson added 13 and Lee Massey six. The Wardogs were led by 12 points apiece from Michael Anderson and Nolan Couch.

Roland 59, Hale 42 (Girls)

Like the boys' team, the Lady Rangers captured their second tournament title of January by rolling through the Gold Bracket of the NEO tourney.

In Saturday's championship game, Roland opened up an 18-point lead in the second half while running its record to 13-2. A 17-7 spurt in the third quarter put the Lady Rangers ahead 44-26 with eight minutes left in the ball game.

Katie Beshoner led Roland with 17 points and was joined in double figures by Ericka Edwards with 10. Jenny Beshoner added nine and Amanda Williams eight.

Hale was led by a game-high 25 points from Ruth Stewart.

The Lady Rangers opened tournament play on Thursday with a 68-61 win over Ketchum before defeating Wyandotte in the semifinals, 52-31.
