Dear Editor:

The Cookson Hills Community Action Foster Grandparent Program held their monthly meeting March 15 at the Sallisaw home extension building. We would like to thank Rebecca at the home extension office for helping provide this building for our monthly meetings and to Farris Tatham for being there to offer his assistance. This is a meeting held each month with foster grandparents who volunteer at Muldrow, Vian and Sallisaw schools.

The foster grandparents and I were excited to have four new foster grandparents start at Sallisaw Liberty School, their names are Wylie P. Cole, Jackie Stewart, Virginia Ransom and Wilberta McKinney.

Granny Lucille Crocket, a granny at Muldrow Elementary School, died suddenly Feb. 19. She was a granny since September 1997. We are all going to miss her, especially her children at the school where she volunteered. The grannies from Muldrow and Sallisaw are going to have a plaque made and present it to her class in memory of Granny Lucille.

Genevieve Holt, a granny at Maryetta School, and Faye Batey, a granny at Muldrow Elementary School, were guests on the Polly Crews show March 31. On Jan. 21 Norma Denney, granny at Sallisaw Liberty School and Bruce Killer, a grandpa at Stilwell Vo Ag, were guests her show. I am so proud that they are willing to represent their schools and county and the Cookson Hills Community Action Foster Grandparent Program.

Grandpa Wylie Cole is new in our program but it is so exciting to see a man wanting to volunteer with the children in school. I am hoping that this will attract more men to the program. A poem was read to us by Grandpa Wylie titled "What Is a Grandparent." Norma Denney gave the poem to me and I made copies of it to give to the grandparents. Grandpa Wylie is in the process of writing a poem about the foster grandparent program.

The foster grandparents discussed the cookbooks that they are trying to sell for an upcoming trip in June. The recipes in the book are from the foster grandparents. Anyone interested in buying a cookbook please contact me at 918-775-9116.

At the conclusion of our meeting we had a door prize drawing. The winners were Granny Eva Matthews from Muldrow Middle School and Granny Verda Cox from Sallisaw Liberty School.

Cookson Hills Community Action Foster Grandparent Program is a part of the National Senior Service Corps, federally funded by a grant from the Corporation for National Service, with additional funding from the Oklahoma Department of Human Services Division, Aging Services Division.

For more information concerning the foster grandparent program please contact Belinda Scogg1ns, area director, at 918-775-9116.

Thank you,

Belinda Scoggins

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
