After a one-year hiatus as champions of their own Black Diamond Invitational, the Sallisaw golfers are back on top.

Trent Whitekiller and Michael Anderson led the way as the Diamonds rolled to the team title of Thursday's high school tournament played at Shadow Creek County Club in Sallisaw.

Sallisaw had a four-player score of 307 to finish 17 strokes ahead of runner-up Muldrow, which was paced by medalist Luke Morgan. Fort Gibson was third at 328 and Poteau rounded out the top four at the 10-team event at 336.

Fort Smith Southside, the 2003 champion, was unable to defend its title since Arkansas schools now designate golf as a fall sport. Sallisaw improved on its ninth-place showing from last year by placing two of its golfers in the top three overall on Thursday.

Whitekiller, who was coming off a tournament win at Savanna earlier in the week, led the Diamonds with a one-under-par 70 to grab second place. Senior teammate Anderson was one stroke back, taking third individually with a 71.

Sallisaw also used Blaine Teague's 82 and an 84 from Blake Stuart. Max Knoke was the fifth Diamond, shooting a 93.

Muldrow had three of its players finish in the top 10 overall. Morgan was the top finisher among Sequoyah County golfers at last year's tournament when he was fourth. This year, the senior fired a two-under-par 69 to win the individual championship.

Sophomore Trevor Earls, sparked by an eagle on the par-four 10th hole, came in sixth with a 75 for the Bulldogs. Blaz McMullen came in ninth overall after carding a 79, Muldrow's Jake Short finished at 99 and Chris Waters 101.

Among other local teams at the Black Diamond Invitational, Roland finished eighth at 421 and Cave Springs was 10th with a 456.

Roland was paced by Nate Farrell's 91 while teammate Josh Niemann shot a 97. Cave Springs, which is in its second season of golf, was led by Shantry Hilliard's 108.

Another local in the tournament was Chris Plank as Gans' lone competitor. The senior shot a 99.

The girls will get their turn on Thursday, when Sallisaw hosts the annual Lady Diamond Invitational at Shadow Creek.
