Cave Springs High School near Bunch in Adair County was forced to cancel classes last week after vandals struck the school, causing extensive damage.

Adair County Sheriff Gerald Coleman said Thursday that the vandalism was discovered on the evening of Feb. 24. He speculated that the damage was probably done the previous night.

He said no dollar amount has been figured for the damage yet. "It's still under investigation."

There are suspects in the vandalism, but Coleman could not name anyone, he said.

Coleman said the vandals either had a key to the main school building or found a door unlocked in order to gain entry. He noted that windows were broken to gain entry to several outbuildings.

The damage included spray-painted graffiti and overturned and broken items.

"All the fire extinguishers in the building were discharged," Coleman said. "That junk was everywhere."

He believed they started cleaning up the school Wednesday in the hope of going back to school Monday.

"It's going to take a lot of work to clean that up," Coleman said.

When asked if anything was stolen, Coleman said he can't believe the vandals would not have stolen something, but with the disarray that the school is in they won't know that until they clean up and conduct an inventory.

Your TIMES was unable to reach a school official for comment about the vandalism.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
