A Shawnee man died Wednesday from injuries he sustained in an accident on Interstate 40 near Roland, which was the second fatality accident in two days in the county.
The accident occurred at about 7:10 p.m. Wednesday three miles east of Roland on Interstate 40, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) reported.
Lance J. Adams, 21, of Chickasha was driving a 2002 Ford Explorer east on I-40 when for an unknown reason Adams lost control of his vehicle, which then traveled across the center median where it overturned. The vehicle continued overturning and came to rest on the westbound shoulder of the interstate, according to the OHP.
Adams, who was wearing a seatbelt during the accident, was trapped in the vehicle for about 20 minutes before being freed. He was taken by Pafford Emergency Medical Service (EMS) to St. Edward Mercy Medical Center in Fort Smith, Ark., where he was admitted in critical condition with head, and internal injuries.
A passenger in Adams' vehicle, James J. Collins, 30, of Shawnee, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was thrown an unknown distance from the vehicle, the OHP reported. Collins was taken by Pafford EMS to St. Edward where he died from injuries he sustained in the accident.
The OHP reported that the condition of the driver and cause of collision is unknown and an investigation is pending.
Early Tuesday morning a Muldrow man was killed near Vian after reportedly falling asleep at the wheel, the OHP reported.
