They approved a $1 million Community Development Block Grant for the Sequoyah County Water Association, contingent upon District Attorney Richard Gray's approval of the contract. The grant will be used to build a one-million-gallon water tank on Jeremiah Mountain in the Liberty area. The builder, Circle P Welding of Norman, could begin on the project as soon as the contract is approved by the district attorney.
A $14,000 Rural Economic Action Plan (REAP) grant was approved by the commissioners to be used to overlay the parking lot at the Sequoyah County Fairgrounds in Sallisaw. The parking lot is currently gravel.
A $16,500 REAP grant will be used to chip and seal two miles of county road south and east of Muldrow in the Cottonwood area. The road is in District 1 Commissioner Bruce Tabor's area.
A $20,500 REAP grant was approved to build a new water office for Rural Water District No. 5 in the Carlile area east of Gore. District 2 Commissioner Steve Carter said the rural water district needs a new office because the present office floods.
A $16,500 REAP grant was approved to chip and seal a two-mile section of Redland Road, north of U.S. Highway 64 between Sallisaw and Muldrow in District 3.
The commissioners also approved renewal of the annual contract with Kelly Engineering and Associates of Tahlequah. The contract, which is the same as last year's, is for $300 a month plus an hourly charge for engineering services.
The commissioners approved $201,571.26 in highway expenditures for the month. Tabor said the funds, which are split between the three county districts, are from fuel taxes and other fees, and are from collections in December, which are usually higher than other months due to the holidays.
