SALINA - The Gore slowpitch softball team took the first step toward a return trip to the state tournament with an undefeated run through the Class 4A district playoffs on Monday.

The No. 7-ranked Lady Pirates posted three wins-one against Salina and two against Colcord-to claim another district championship and run their record to 31-4 on the season.

Senior third baseman Michelle Locust hit a home run in each game for Gore. Her seventh homer of the season came in the championship game, an 11-5 victory over Colcord.

Gore pounded out 17 basehits in the contest and Bethany Dotson also hit a home run. The Lady Pirates led 4-2 entering the bottom of the fourth inning, when they scored six times to pull away. Rachel Dick was the winning pitcher for Gore, notching her second decision of the day and moving to 16-2 on the season.

The Lady Pirates opened the day with a 6-2 win over tournament host Salina. A four-run third inning put Gore in front and dropped Salina into the losers' bracket.

The closest game of the day was a 9-8 win over Colcord in the Lady Pirates' second outing of the afternoon. Locust, Dotson and Chelsea Kizzia all hit home runs for Gore, which had 13 hits and rallied from an early 6-2 deficit.

Colcord bounced back after that to eliminate Salina and set up the championship game.

Gore moves on to the regional playoffs next week, where the Lady Pirates will try to clinch their third-consecutive trip to the state tournament.
