SHS Tracksters Win Medals At Vinita

VINITA - The Sallisaw track and field teams traveled to Vinita on Tuesday and came home with several medals from the Hornet Relays.

Annie Hadley and Tasha Shockey led the Lady Diamonds to a ninth-place team showing at the meet, while Jody Kilpatrick and James Riggs paced the Black Diamonds to 10th among boys teams at the event.

Hadley, a senior who did not compete at Hilldale the previous Friday, returned to action Tuesday and placed in three events.

Hadley captured first place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.11 seconds. She was also second in the long jump with an effort of 15 feet, 11 inches and took third in the high jump by clearing four feet, 10 inches.

Hadley's performance accounted for 24 of the Lady Diamonds' 34 team points with Shockey earning the other 10. Shockey, a freshman shot putter, won her second meet in a row following last week's triumph at Hilldale. Her throw of 34 feet, six inches was more than three feet better than the second-place finisher.

Kilpatrick earned seven points for the SHS boys. The junior placed third in the long jump with an effort of 18 feet, inches and he also ran an 11:49 in the 100-meter dash to get sixth.

Junior thrower Riggs was third in the discus competition, hurling it 121 feet, three inches.

Miami, sparked by relay wins at 800 and 1,600 meters, ran away with the girls' championship at Vinita. The Lady Wardogs tallied 106 team points to outdistance runner-up Vinita by 19. Skiatook athletes swept four events-discus, pole vault, shot put and 3,200 meters-to win the boys' title with 109 points. Inola was second with 84.
