The community coalition Gans CARES will host a public forum at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Gans City Hall community room.

Allan Rau, one of the group's organizers, said Lee Sharp of People inc. in Sallisaw will discuss "Alcohol and Chemical Abuse, How It Affects Families and How to Cope." A question and answer period will follow Sharp's presentation.

Rau said Gans CARES was organized in January to do something about the substance abuse in the community.

"The mission is to improve the physical, mental, social and spiritual quality of life in our community," Rau said.

"Informational and organizational meetings are being held to educate the citizens and community leaders about the scope of these problems," Rau said. "The group's objective is to identify, develop and utilize community assets and resources in a coordinated health improvement effort, with maximum emphasis on community action and involvement."

"Additional programs are planned," he added. "The coalition plans to promote community activities and forums, and assist other organizations, school or church groups with community projects. The first cooperative effort will be with the Gans City Council for the May 1 City Clean Up Day."

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
