Dear Editor:

Sequoyah County Cookson Hills Community Action Foster Grandparents who included schools Vian, Muldrow, and Sallisaw held their monthly inservice meeting April 9 at the Sallisaw Home Extension Building. Farris Tatham is always there willing to offer his assistance.

David Scott, who is a disc jockey for a gospel radio station in Tahlequah, was our guest speaker. He is retired and when he isn't on his radio show he volunteers with people who have special needs.

We discussed our end of school dinner and voted to eat at Golden Corral restaurant in Fort Smith May 19. The Foster Grandparents and I would like to thank Cookson Hills Community Action for providing the KATS bus transportation to take us to Fort Smith.

April 8, Peggy Edgmon Granny at Sallisaw Elementary and I traveled to Tahlequah for the Cookson Hills Community Action Foster Grandparent Overall Advisory Council Meeting. Granny Peggy, who is a member and is Sequoyah County Foster Grandparent of the year, and I attend these meetings together.

Sallisaw Liberty and Eastside Foster Grandparents met April 20 and invited different newspapers to come to have pictures made to introduce Grandpa Wylie, who is volunteering at Sallisaw Liberty Kindergarten, and to inform the community that we have a Grandpa in Sequoyah County who is volunteering with the Foster Grandparent Program.

Children who have a granny or grandpa in the school that they attend will never forget their kindness. I want to thank Sallisaw Liberty Grannies and Grandpa for the very special group picture that you had made at school and gave to me. It is in my office for me to look at and to brag about, but I do not need a picture to be able to talk about my very special people.

April 26 Muldrow Sallisaw, and Vian Foster Grandparents met at Muldrow School to present a Plaque to Granny Lucille Crockett's class in memory of her.

It was an emotional time for everyone, but it brought happiness to all the Foster Grandparents me, and the teachers. A special thank you to Principle Mr. Michael at Muldrow Elementary School and staff for helping to prepare for this memorial dedication.

Also discussed donating a basket of gifts to Paralyzed Veterans of America for a drawing at a fishing tournament that will be held in May. At the conclusion of the meeting we had a door prize drawing. The winners were grannies Marjorie Stewart at Sallisaw Liberty and Ada Blount at Sallisaw Elementary.

Cookson Hills Community Action Foster Grandparents and I would like to thank the newspapers for the news coverage that we are given. With this coverage the Foster Grandparents can get the recognition that they deserve. To the communities: If you ever meet a granny or grandpa that you know who is working as a volunteer in the schools or anyone that is involved with the school system please stop them and say thank you. What these individuals do for our children could never be expressed in enough words.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
