Volunteer firemen in the east end of Sequoyah County are volunteering for a new purpose - they are raising funds to send World War II veterans on a trip to Washington, D.C., to see the World War II Memorial.

Greg Walters, fireman, said volunteer firemen from the Roland, Muldrow, Liberty, Maple, Nicut, Redland and Lee Creek Volunteer Fire Departments will be holding a boot drive from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday in both Muldrow and Roland.

"In Muldrow they will be at the stop light at the intersection of U.S. Highway 64 and State Highway 64B, at the stop light," Walters said. "In Roland they will be at the intersection of U.S. Highway 64 and Roland Road, at the stop light."

Walters said, "this is a good project for the fire departments to get involved in. We want to show our gratitude to the veterans, especially to the World War II veterans."

The fundraiser is in support of a trip planned for World War II veterans, which has been dubbed The Greatest Generation, by State Rep. Glen "Bud" Smithson (D-Sallisaw) and State Sen. Kenneth Corn (D-Poteau).

They estimate the trip will cost about $800 per person. The Oklahoma Department of Veterans Affairs has agreed to provide any medical services needed on the trip. They hope to make the trip to Washington, D.C., in early May.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
