Carl Albert State College (CASC) Sallisaw has launched the 2004-5 campaign in Sequoyah County to offer scholarships for students attending CASC Sallisaw next fall.

The campaign is directed by the Sallisaw Committee for Excellence, a group of local community leaders supporting the scholarship program for the CASC Development Foundation. Committee chairman is Buddy Spencer.

"Our goal this year is to raise $30,000 to provide 45 scholarships to Sequoyah County students who will be entering college next fall at the Sallisaw campus," Spencer said. "All of the money raised provides scholarships for high school graduates from within the county, so the funds raised here will stay here, and benefit our own young people."

Other members of the Committee for Excellence are J.T. Stites, Gary Schaefer, Don Elwick, Delores Mitchell, Jerry Hetherington, Bill Baker, Jerry Smith, Gary Folsom, Roger Sharp, Mike Neer, and Garry Ivey, CASC Development Foundation chief executive officer.

"The CASC Development Foundation is very grateful for these committee members who have stepped forward to help benefit the students in Sequoyah County," Ivey said. "We use 100 percent of the money to provide scholarships for entering freshmen at the Sallisaw campus, and at least two graduates from each high school in the county will have an opportunity to receive a scholarship. Scholarships will be for $660, which is about half the cost of tuition for one year at CASC."

The Committee for Excellence has already received a big boost in this year's scholarship drive...a $5,000 pledge from the Sallisaw Improvement Corporation, presented by Gary Schaefer to help kick off the campaign.

On May 28, the Committee for Excellence will host the second annual Scholarship Golf Tournament at Shadow Creek Country Club in Sallisaw, with all proceeds from the event going to the scholarship program.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
