Sequoyah County District Attorney Richard Gray announced last week that the reason charges were dropped against the Gore mayor and city council member who were arrested in March for allegedly violating the Oklahoma Open Meetings Act is because an agreement of understanding has been reached.

Gray said he met with attorneys for the City of Gore to work out an amicable resolution outside the criminal justice system.

Gray said an agreement was reached wherein the parties will sign a Memorandum of Understanding. The memorandum reads that Gray's office will dismiss the charges providing Mayor Larry Pack and Belinda Madding, council member, comply with the laws of the State of Oklahoma in all future public official activities.

Pack and Madding were not available for comment.

"I am pleased to be able to reach an understanding, so early into this case," Gray said.

Pack and Madding were facing several misdemeanor charges before the Sequoyah County District Attorney's Office moved to dismiss the case.

Pack and Madding were charged with two counts of violating the Open Meetings Act. Madding was also charged with one count of dual office holding.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
