STROUD - Sallisaw's Tasha Shockey brought home a gold medal on Tuesday as the Lady Diamond and Black Diamond tracksters competed at the Stroud meet.

Shockey, who qualified for the state meet last spring as a freshman, took first place in the shot put competition. Her throw of 36 feet, three inches edged the runnerup by five inches. Sallisaw teammate Amy Smith also placed in the event, taking fifth with a throw of 31-11.

Shockey also competed in the discus and took sixth place with an effort of 85 feet, 10 inches.

The Lady Diamonds tallied 19 team points with the remainder earned by freshman Meghan Smith in the long jump and 400-meter dash. Smith ran 1:05.01 to get fifth in the 400 and she jumped 13 feet, 10 inches to get fifth in that event.

The Sallisaw girls finished 13th in the team standings. Coalgate won the girls' championship with 110 points. Oklahoma City Millwood won three relay events to grab second with 107 and Chandler was third with 56.

The Sallisaw boys finished 10th overall with 18 team points, 16 of which were earned in two relay events.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
