The American Cancer Society Relay For Life celebrates the lives of hundreds of local residents who have survived cancer, while offering the hope of finding a cure.

To honor the incredible strength and courage of cancer survivors, all area survivors are invited to unite in a celebration dinner prior to the beginning of this year's relay and participate in a "Survivors' Lap" at the Relay For Life event in Sallisaw.

The 11th annual Sequoyah County Relay for Life will be held at the Sallisaw football field on June 27 and 28.

Bev Taylor, Relay For Life of Sequoyah County finance chair, said, "The survivors' lap takes place directly after the opening ceremony, with only survivors taking the track and walking one lap around the track together. Relay For Life is a handicapped-accessible event."

Taylor said, "The Relay for Life event in Sequoyah County is an all-night community event bringing together teams of families, friends, churches, neighborhoods, and businesses - all with the same goal of curing cancer. Teams of walkers keep a continuous presence on the track throughout the night, walking in shifts to raise funds for the American Cancer Society."

Smith said new teams are still needed, and can sign up by contacting the Sequoyah County co-chairs, either Smith at (918) 774-4902 or Terry McCarty at (918) 774-6235.

Dollars raised through Relay for Life help support the American Cancer Society's research, education, advocacy and patient services. Programs include Reach to Recovery, a new program for Sequoyah County this year that provides one-on-one support for breast cancer patients.

Relay For Life also helps maintain the American Cancer Society's toll-free 24-hour cancer information line, 1-800-ACS-2345, and the Web site, www.cancer.org.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
