Organizers say there are still some openings for the second annual Carl Albert State College Scholarship Golf Tournament, which will be held May 28 at the Shadow Creek Country Club in Sallisaw.

Check-in and lunch will be at 11:45 a.m. with tee-off time for the four-person scramble tournament at 1 p.m.

Proceeds of the tournament will provide scholarships to help students attend CASC Sallisaw next fall.

Golfers will compete for prizes throughout the day, with awards going to the top four teams.

An individual prize will be awarded to players closest to the hole, sponsored by Sallisaw Lumber Company. In addition, the first player to make a hole-in-one on number 3 will win a new pickup contributed by Blue Ribbon Auto Group of Sallisaw. Sponsors for the event are Jerry Hetherington of Sallisaw Lumber and Buddy Spencer of Blue Ribbon Auto Group.

The tournament is hosted by the CASC Committee for Excellence, with the goal of raising the money to provide at least 15 scholarships for Sequoyah County students to attend CASC Sallisaw next fall.

"The event is part of our ongoing effort to provide a total of 44 scholarships," committee chairman Buddy Spencer said. "Last year we provided 39 scholarships to students graduating from high schools throughout Sequoyah County to attend the CASC Sallisaw campus.

"We want to increase that number this year, and this golf tournament is an effort to provide deserving students here in Sequoyah County the opportunity to get a college education."

The $660 scholarships, which provide $330 in tuition per semester during the fall and spring semesters of 2004-5, are awarded to students from every high school in Sequoyah County, with distribution based on the number of graduates at each school.

Last year, Sallisaw graduates received 10 scholarships; Muldrow, 9; Roland, 6; Vian, 5; Gore, 4; Central, 3; and Gans, 2.

"These scholarship recipients have the Committee for Excellence to thank for this scholarship program," Garry Ivey, CASC Development Foundation chief executive officer, said. The foundation administers the scholarships.

"Buddy Spencer, Jerry Hetherington, and the other committee members are to be applauded for their commitment to the young people of Sequoyah County. Without their hard work and efforts on behalf of these young people, this scholarship program would not exist. The CASC Development Foundation, and the students who will benefit from this program owe them a tremendous debt of gratitude."

Other Committee for Excellence members are J.T. Stites, Bill Baker, Roger Sharp, Gary Folsom, Delores Mitchell, Gary Schaefer, Don Elwick, Don Armstrong, Jerry Smith, and Mike Neer.
