A grass fire Sunday evening burned about 25 acres, threatened a Christmas tree farm near Gore and is under investigation as an arson case, Dana Tracy, Rural Fire Protection District No. 1 fire chief, said Monday.

Tracy said firefighters were called to the fire at about 6:30 p.m. Friday. The fire was three miles north of Gore on State Highway 10.

"We were assisted by forestry (from the State Department of Agriculture) and the Webbers Falls fire department," Tracy reported, "and were on the scene until 9:30 p.m."

Tracy said a second grass fire along an electric pole right-of-way was also extinguished. "We were concerned that the poles might catch fire," he added.

Tracy said the landowner "was not happy."

The fire is under investigation by the state fire marshal, Tracy said.

A second grass fire, which began at about 5:30 p.m. Sunday, burned about a quarter acre, Tracy said. The fire, on Gore Landing Road, was quickly extinguished, he reported, and not considered to be arson.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
