Dear Editor:

It is time once again in Sequoyah County to make plans for the 2004 American Cancer Society-Sequoyah County Relay for Life. This year's Relay for Life will be 7 p.m. July 16 until 7 a.m. July 17 at the Perry F. Lattimore Football Stadium in Sallisaw.

We are asking corporations, civic organization, churches and community volunteers to form teams and raise money to help find a cure for cancer. Then on July 16 we will have our Relay for Life walk, along with music, games, food and just a whole lot of fun. A festive atmosphere always develops around the track at Relay for Life as we make new friends and spend time with old ones.

Why should we participate in Relay for Life? One in three Americans will get cancer. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer; 230,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year; also there were 1.3 million new cases of skin cancer last year. Everyone is personally affected by cancer sooner or later. Today more than half of cancer patients survive. The survival rate can be increased through more research and greater community awareness of health issues. So fight back, get involved, and then join us July 16 to celebrate.

Relay for Life gives everyone an opportunity to fight back-to make a difference in the battle against cancer. This year's theme is "Hope Today - Cure Tomorrow" and with your help we can make it happen.

Relay for Life opens with cancer survivors walking the first lap. This is an emotional time and sets the stage for the importance of each participant's contribution; so if you are a cancer survivor make plans now to attend this year's Relay for Life. We will have free T-shirts and goody bags for all survivors. Registration begins at 6:30 p.m., come, bring a 1awnchair and enjoy the evening.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
