A Phoenix, Ariz., man caught trafficking in drugs by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) near Interstate 40 and Dwight Mission Road in January was sentenced in federal court in Muskogee recently, U.S. Attorney Sheldon J. Sperling said Monday.

Lawrence Louis Gutierrez Jr., 20, pleaded guilty to a two-count indictment, and was sentenced to 10 years in prison on the charge of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and aiding and abetting. He also received a consecutive five-year concurrent term of supervised release on each count, and was ordered to pay a total of $200 in special assessments.

Michael Littlefield, assistant U.S. attorney who prosecuted the case, said the charges resulted from an investigation by Agent Darren Lane of the Drug Enforcement Administration that stemmed from a Jan. 7 traffic stop by OHP Trooper Cody Hyde.

A search of the vehicle in which Gutierrez was a passenger resulted in the seizure of three-quarters of a pound of pure crystal methamphetamine. He also possessed a loaded Glock 9 mm semi-automatic pistol, which was discovered sitting on top of the methamphetamine. The vehicle's driver, Michael Curtis Williams, also pleaded guilty and awaits sentencing.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
