The Brent Rural Fire District south of Sallisaw has been awarded $43,520 by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Emergency Preparedness and Response Directorate.

U.S. Sen. Don Nickles (R-Ponca City) announced the award Thursday.

Craig Calhoun, the fire district board co-chairman, said Brent volunteer firefighters need the money badly. "All our gear is outdated. We applied for new fire suits and air packs mainly. We were down to nearly nothing," Calhoun said.

Calhoun said the Brent Rural Fire Department provides fire protection to residents and small businesses in an area from south of the Sallisaw city limits into LeFlore County to Tucker and Cowlington Road. The department is also responsible for fire protection to several federal facilities.

"We cover the (Robert S. Kerr) lock and dam, the power station, the Coast Guard station, the Corps of Engineers office building - we cover many big government facilities," Calhoun said.

He added, "We also assist the Sallisaw Fire Department, and they assist us."

Nickles said the federal funding can be used to make improvements to all aspects of fire operations and firefighter safety including training, wellness and fitness, firefighter equipment, and personal protective equipment.

Those receiving grants are required to report to the Federal Emergency Management Agency on how the money is used during the year.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
