Roland Elementary School will have enrollment for Head Start, pre-kindergarten and kindergarten from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day, Monday through Friday at the lower elementary school office. In order to enroll a child parents or guardians must bring the child's birth certificate, updated shot records, Social Security card and Certificate of Degree of Indian Blood card if they have one. In order to enroll for Head Start and pre-kindergarten the child must be four years old on or before Sept. 1. Kindergarten students must be five years old on or before Sept. 1.

Smoking cessation classes are held at 3 p.m. every Monday at the Muldrow Cherokee Community Activity Center (MCCO) and are sponsored by the MCCO and the Redbird Smith Health Center in Sallisaw. This is a support group and class for those who are quitting or want to quit smoking. The class is free of charge. For information call (918) 427-5440.

Muldrow Elementary School will hold pre-enrollment for Head Start and the Early Childhood Program from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day, from Monday through Friday at the elementary school. The Early Childhood Program is for children who will be age 4 by Sept. 1. The Head Start program is federally funded and students will be selected on their family's income. Screenings will also be done on a first come first served basis. At the time of pre-enrollment, parents must bring the child's immunization record, birth certificate, Social Security card and Medicaid and Certificate of Degree of Indian Blood cards, if applicable.

Walking 101 will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at the Muldrow Cherokee Community Center (MCCO), and will continue for 12 weeks. Sign up will be at the MCCO Activity Center Tuesday and the class will begin at Muldrow Park where it will be held at 10 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday for 12 weeks, with the last class "on your own." Friday, May 2


The Marble City Spring Fling will open with a night of gospel music from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Marble City Community Building. The Spring Fling will continue at 7 a.m. on Saturday with yard sales, flea markets, concessions and a burrito plate dinner at 6:30 p.m.

Sequoyah Memorial Hospice will hold a western-themed volunteer roundup for hospice volunteers and those interested in volunteering at noon Friday at the city park just west of the hospital. A cookout will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday to benefit Help-in-Crisis and the Children's Safehaven Advocacy Center. The cook-out will be held at the advocacy center at 101 E. Chickasaw in Sallisaw, and will offer a hamburger or two hotdogs, with sides and a drink for $5. The event is to note that April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Roland Public Schools will have committee meetings for various programs provided to students in the school. The open meeting will be held at 9 a.m. Friday in the administration building on the Roland School Campus. Topics will include curriculum, federal programs and grants and the Comprehensive Local Education Plan, which is the written curriculum for Roland Schools. The Title I Advisory Committee meeting will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in the board room at the administration building. Title I is a federally-funded program which provides money for services in mathematics and reading.

The 2008 Sallisaw Shodeo Buckle Series next shodeo will begin at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 3, at the Sallisaw Rodeo Arena. Events include barrel racing, pole bending and the flag race, and the entry fee is $10 for all three events. Admission is $1 per person. The age groups are leadline, five and under rider, six through eight, nine through 12, and 13 through 18. An exhibition class is also included. Entrants must provide a copy of their birth certificate to verify age and must compete in their specified age group. A negative Coggins test is also required for each horse that enters the grounds. To qualify for prizes, riders must participate in 12 of the 14 shodeos and parents must volunteer to work at least two shodeos. The group is also sponsoring a royalty contest for Miss Shodeo and Mr. Shodeo, for riders age 10 and up, and Little Miss Shodeo and Little Mr. Shodeo, for riders age nine and under. Other shodeos are planned for May 17 and 31, June 7, 14 and 28, Aug. 23, Sept. 20 and Oct. 4. Masonic Lodges in the county will be holding benefit breakfasts to raise money for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life of Sequoyah County. The Muldrow Mason Lodge benefit breakfast will begin at 6 a.m. Saturday, May 3. Sallisaw Masonic Lodge will hold a benefit breakfast for the relay from 7 to 10 a.m., Saturday, May 3. The relay, which raises money for the American Cancer Society, will be held Friday and Saturday, June 27 and 28, at the Sallisaw football stadium.

The annual garage sale will be held from 7 a.m. until 1 p.m. Saturday, May 3, at the First United Methodist Church in Sallisaw, sponsored by the Methodist Men. For more information contact the church office at 775-2538.

The Bullet Ross family reunion will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 3, at the Sallisaw Civic Center. Friends are also invited to drop by and visit.

A yard sale and bake sale to benefit the March of Dimes will begin at 7 a.m. Saturday, May 3, at 205 S. J.T. Stites Blvd. in Sallisaw. The event is sponsored by People Inc.

An All-You-Can-Eat Breakfast will be held from 7 until 10 a.m. Saturday, May 3, at Sallisaw Masonic Lodge No. 120, across from Sequoyah Memorial Hospital. Pancakes, sausage, biscuits and gravy, coffee, juice and milk are on the menu, and the cost is $4 for adults and $2 for children age 12 and under.

Muldrow High School Band Day will be Saturday, May 3. Band members will hold a yard sale and car wash at Simple Simon Pizza in Muldrow. The yard sale will begin at 8 a.m. and the car wash will begin at 9 a.m. The band will also hold a free concert at 6 p.m. at the Muldrow City Park. Those planning to attend are reminded to bring a lawn chair. A barbequed brisket sandwich with beans, potato salad, a drink and dessert may be purchased for $7. The money raised will help pay for the band's trip to Washington, D.C., to play at the National Anthem Project Flag Day event which will be held from June 12 through 15.

Garrison Creek Riders will host their first ranch rodeo of the season at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 3, at the club arena on U.S. Highway 64 between Muldrow and Roland. The four events will be team penning, team sorting, team branding and team trailering, and teams will consist of three riders. Tuesday, May 6, is the deadline for Relay for Life of Sequoyah County teams to register for the fundraiser for the American Cancer Society and cancer patients. The relay, which raises money for the American Cancer Society, will be held Friday and Saturday, June 27 and 28, at the Sallisaw football stadium.

Brushy Elementary School will have pre-school screenings for the 2008-9 school year from 9:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, and Wednesday, May 7. All children must be age 4 on or before Sept. 1. Parents must provide the child's birth certificate, immunization records, Certificate of Degree of Indian Blood card, Social Security card and Sooner Care card at the time of enrollment.

The Muldrow Cherokee Community Organization (MCCO) will meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, at the MCCO Activity Center. The MCCO holds regular monthly meeting on the first Tuesday of every month, and all community members are invited to attend.

Central School will have enrollment for pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and the school's new 3-year-old program from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, and from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, May 8. Members of the Webbers Falls Masonic Lodge No. 14 will hold their first free Youth Air Rifle Target Shoot at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 10, at Webbers Falls City Park. Signup will begin at 9 a.m. All guns and pellets will be supplied for the shoot. The shoot includes two age groups, for youths age 9 through 11 and age 12 through 14. A Crossman 760 Pumpmaster air rifle will be awarded to the winner in each age group. All contestants must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Tuesday, May 13, is the deadline for Relay for Life of Sequoyah County corporate sponsorship commitments, which range from $100 to $1,000. The next General Educational Development (GED) test will be given at 7 a.m. Tuesday, May 13, at the Adult Education Center at 312 S. Walnut in Sallisaw. Gore's Spring Clean-Up Days will be held Friday, May 16, and Saturday, May 17. Gore Public Works (GPWA) water and trash customers will be allowed to dispose of undesirable items, with some exceptions such as no batteries, air compressors, hazardous materials, business or commercial waste, and no tires. A detailed list of acceptable and unacceptable items will posted at the Gore Municipal Building and other locations in Gore. The list will also be available at the clean-up site during the event. Drop off will be in large containers to be temporarily placed at the intersection of NW Railroad Street and Main Street (Gore intersection of State Highway 100 and U.S. Highway 64). Participants must provide identification and proof of service (a current GPWA water/trash bill).

The fourth annual Ride to Remember Our Veterans and Military Poker Run will be held Sunday, May 18, and will begin at the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 4518, three miles north of Sallisaw on U.S. Highway 59. The event is sponsored by the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. The first bike will leave at noon and the last will be in at 4 p.m. The cost is $15 per hand, $20 with a meal, couples get two hands and a meal for $35, and an extra chip going out is $5, and dinner only is $5. Prizes will be awarded to the most points winner and the lowest points winner, and 100 percent of the profit goes to Fisher House which supports U.S. troops. The 34th Gans High School reunion will be held Saturday, May 24, at Gans High School. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and activities will continue through 2 p.m. The reunion is for former students, teachers and employees of Gans High School. There is no charge for the reunion other than lunch, which will be $10 per person. Gore Public Schools is participating in the Summer Food Service Program. Meals will be provided to district school-age children without charge and will be served at the elementary school at 4th and Winn Streets. The 1982 graduating class of Gore High School will hold a class reunion on Saturday, May 31. A family cookout will be held at 10 a.m. at Ray Fine Park. Classmates will meet at Fin and Feather Resort at 5:15 p.m. for dinner, then visit afterward at the high school. English as a Second Language Classes will begin at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, and will be held for nine more weeks, at the Muldrow Cherokee Community Organization (MCCO) Activity Center in Muldrow. Spanish-speaking citizens will be taught English by Marian Morgan of Muldrow. The class is free and open to all Spanish-speaking citizens.

Free Beginning Cherokee Language Classes will begin at 6 p.m. Monday, June 9, and will continue every Monday for 10 weeks, at the Muldrow Cherokee Community Organization (MCCO) Activity Center in Muldrow. Jim Henson of Sallisaw will be the instructor. The class is for all those interested and who have never had a Cherokee language class or have only taken on class previously.
