Round-Up: Harris, Bartel lead locals at Fort Gibson golf tourney

MUSKOGEE - A pair of Sequoyah County golfers placed in the top 10 on Tuesday at the Fort Gibson Invitational.

Playing on a cold, wet day at Eagle Crest Golf Course, Vian's Nathan Harris and Sallisaw's Jacob Bartel finished among the leaders.

Harris shot an 81 to finish in a three-way tie for sixth place. Bartel, who was coming off a win at last week's Sallisaw tournament, tied for ninth overall with an 82.

Steve Drain of Stilwell won the tourney with a 75 while Hilldale captured the team title with a four-player score of 336.

Fort Gibson (338) was second and Sallisaw placed third in the team standings with a 343.

VIAN 14, GORE 2 (BASEBALL)

GORE - Jarrett "Gee" Tyler hit a grand slam to lead the Wolverines to a Big Eight Conference win at Gore on Tuesday afternoon.

Tyler, a senior catcher, homered with the bases loaded in the seventh inning as Vian scored six runs to seal the victory. The hit was part of a 4-for-4 performance at the plate for Tyler. Arlen Fisher went 2-for-3 and Mike Noeldner was 2-for-4 for the Wolverines, who had 11 hits in all.

Senior pitcher Londell Taylor got the win, moving to 5-1 on the season.

WFHS 12, MCCURTAIN 0 (SOFTBALL)

WEBBERS FALLS - The Lady Warriors erupted for 10 runs in the first inning while cruising to a win over McCurtain on Tuesday.

Webbers Falls ran its record to 15-4 as Ramie Toddy and Kimmy Carter both drove in three runs and had two hits.

KEYS 6, VIAN 3 (BASEBALL) VIAN - Keys scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to get past Vian on Monday afternoon in a Big Eight Conference clash at the Wolverines' field.

Vian out-hit the Cougars by a 12-8 margin, but fell to 16-5 with the setback. Keys' pitcher Jeff Fisher got the win, striking out nine in the process.

HILLDALE 7, MULDROW 5 (BASEBALL) MUSKOGEE - Lance Rolland homered for Hilldale as the Hornets edged Muldrow on Monday afternoon.

Rolland's shot was part of a five-run inning that put Hilldale up 7-2 in the sixth. The Bulldogs tried to rally in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs before Donnie Warlick preserved the win for the Hornets.

Muldrow dropped to 8-12, but the Bulldogs were tied with Hilldale in the top of the sixth inning thanks to Tim Moore's RBI single that drove in Joe Fate Ransom to even the score at 2-2.

CENTRAL 11, WARNER 1 (SOFTBALL) WARNER - The Lady Tigers used a big sixth inning to run-rule Warner on Monday afternoon.

Central avenged a season-opening loss to the Lady Eagles by scoring three times in the first in the inning and tacking on two more runs in the third to lead 5-0. Warner pulled a run back in the bottom of the fourth, but Central exploded for six runs in the sixth to seal the victory.

TAHLEQUAH 4, SALLISAW 3 (SOFTBALL) TAHLEQUAH - Two of the top-three ranked teams in Class 6A met on Monday and Tahlequah scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning to edge third-ranked Sallisaw.

The Lady Diamonds plated a pair of runs in the top of the fourth to grabea 3-2 lead before second-ranked Tahlequah, the defending state champion, rallied for the win.

Sallisaw returned to action on Tuesday at the Oktaha tournament, beating Hartshorne 16-11 and Owasso 10-2. Thursday's schedule includes games against Crowder at 11:30 a.m., Jenks at 2 p.m. and Sequoyah at 3:15.

NORTHSIDE 17, SALLISAW 3 (BASEBALL) FORT SMITH, Ark. - The Black Diamonds settled for fourth place at the Benefit Bank Diamond Classic after a loss to Fort Smith Northside in Saturday's third-place game at Crowder Field.

Sallisaw fell behind 15-0 after three innings before getting on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth. David Hadley was hit by a pitch and scored on an error. The next batter, Tyler Sutherland, singled down the third base line to drive in Matt Oberste.

Sallisaw's final run was scored by Trey Wiley, who drove the ball to the fence in right field and chugged around the bases for an inside-the-park home run.

Northside blew the game open with six runs in the second inning and eight more in the third while dropping Sallisaw to 9-8 on the season. Zach Mitchell and Ian Gillespie had three RBIs each for the Grizzlies.

Hadley, a sophomore pitcher/catcher, was Sallisaw's representative on the all-tournament team.

He pitched the Diamonds to a first-round win over Union Christian before they fell to Southside in the semifinals. Southside went on to win the tournament with a 3-2 victory over Van Buren on Saturday.

VIAN 13, ROLAND 7 (BASEBALL)

ROLAND - Vian let an early lead slip away, but the Wolverines scored six times in the top of eighth inning to beat Roland in a non-conference baseball game on Friday afternoon.

Roland battled back from an early deficit to take its first lead of the game, scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth to go in front 7-6. Vian scored in the top of the seventh to force the extra inning and then pulled away.

Shortstop Londell Taylor belted his seventh home run of the season for Vian, while Roland catcher Chase Quickel also homered.

Wes Carrington took the mound in the seventh inning and was credited with the win for the Wolverines.

GORE AT MUSKOGEE FESTIVAL (SOFTBALL)

MUSKOGEE - The Lady Pirates suffered their first setbacks of the season, but won three of five games at the Muskogee Festival on Thursday and Friday.

Gore began play with a 9-3 win over Sand Springs as Macy Moseley batted 3-for-3 and drove in two runs. Sisters Kendra and Kera Smith both went 2-for-3 and hit two-run homers, while Chelsea Kizzia and Holly Cordray also had a pair of hits.

The Lady Pirates followed that with a 15-14 win over Class 6A defending state champion Tahlequah in nine innings. Kera Smith batted 5-for-5 with a pair of RBIs, while Caitlin Cawhorn was 4-for-5 with two RBIs. Kendra Smith homered while going 3-for-3 at the plate and sisters Dena and Erin Qualls both had two hits in the win.

In the third game on Thursday, Gore suffered its first loss of the season as Pocola took advantage of a season-high eight errors and avenged an earlier loss to the Lady Pirates, 12-6. Caitlin Cawhorn and Holly Cordray both went 3-for-3 at the plate, Erin Qualls was 2-for-3 and Kera Smith homered while going 2-for-2.

Gore lost to Jenks 11-2 despite a solo home run by Macy Moseley, but came back on Friday to beat Roland 11-0. Pitcher Cordray and the Gore fielders held Roland to one hit, while Dena Qualls and Caitlin Cawhorn led the way offensively with 3-for-3 efforts and four RBIs each. Kera Smith belted her ninth home run of the season while going 2-for-2. Cordray was also 2-for-2 and Meaghan Cawhorn was 1-for-2 with an RBI double.

KEYS 7, VIAN 4 (SOFTBALL)

PARK HILL - The Lady Wolverines built an early lead, but couldn't hang on as Keys rallied for the Big Eight Conference victory on Thursday afternoon.

Nicona Stilwell's three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning broke a 4-4 tie and handed the Lady Cougars the victory.

LaQuieta Drew, Summer Pisana and McElhaney loaded the bases to start the game and Tonya Knotts delivered a two-RBI single to put the Lady Wolverines in front.

Vian then made it 3-0 in the third inning when Knotts' RBI single drove in Drew.

Keys rallied to seize a 4-3 lead, but Vian pulled even when McElhaney hit an RBI double that scored Rachael Sanders.
