Vickie Tincher, deputy clerk, said Madding resigned because the town has the responsibility to have someone working at the city office full time. Madding works in administration for Vian Schools and it is hard for her to be available to help the public access city records.
The council voted to appoint Madding as vice mayor, a position previously held by Steve Taylor. The board also appointed Teresa Boyd to fill the city clerk and treasurer position until the next election. Boyd will also continue to be responsible for the water utility office, Tincher said.
The council discussed the appearance and maintenance of the town, and heard complaints about a town policy to stop mowing private vacant lots.
Tincher said according to state law, the town can not use public funds for use on private property, which includes using equipment or city workers. She said the town has mowed residents' vacant lots for the past 20 years, but was unaware that doing so was against the law. Those complaining about the change were informed of the law at the meeting.
The council also voted to asphalt Highland Park Housing Addition and Clear Creek Road, which will be done in the near future. Tincher said the board awarded the contracting bid to Patton Construction of Tahlequah.
The council also set Sept. 18 as the date for a car show and cruise night, which will be sponsored by the Gore Chamber of Commerce.
