The Muldrow Lady Bulldogs didn't produce as many runs as they usually do, but they got enough to knock off one of their rivals on Monday afternoon.

Muldrow scored twice in the first inning and went on to grab a 4-1 victory at Sallisaw.

Lady Bulldog head coach Gary Gibson estimated his team has been scoring about eight runs a game while putting together a record of 15-9. Hitting has been a big key to Muldrow's success this spring.

"The girls have been playing real well this whole month," said Gibson. "Hitting the ball, right now, is our best deal. We've been hitting it hard-not the big boomers, but we've been hitting it hard and sharp and hitting some good line drives. They're really smacking the ball right in the center."

Seniors Fallen Tate and Brandy Watkins led Muldrow offensively on Monday, combining for five of the team's 12 hits. Tate batted 3-for-4 with three singles, while Watkins went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs.

Tate scored the game's first run, reaching base on a single and scoring on an RBI triple by Sarah Martin. Watkins drove in Martin with a single to make it 2-0 in the top of the first.

Martin scored again in the third inning after reaching base on a fielder's choice. She scored from first when Watkins doubled to left center.

Sallisaw threatened to rally in the bottom of the inning as Jessika Duvall, Heather McCawley and Kortni Sanders all reached to load the bases. However, all three runners were left stranded when Muldrow third baseman Kassadi Click fielded a pop-up to end the inning.

Kelsie Watts extended the Muldrow lead to 4-0 in the top of the fifth with a sacrifice fly that scored Kindra Woods from third base.

Sallisaw tried to rally again in the bottom of the sixth as McCawley and Sanders led off with singles. Ashley Covington hit an RBI single to bring McCawley home, but Muldrow got out of the inning without any further damage.

The game was originally scheduled to be played last Friday in Muldrow, but was rained out. It was the Lady Bulldogs' first outing since beating Webbers Falls and losing a close one to Hilldale in a Thursday three-way.

"We had a three-day layoff, but the girls did pretty well," said Gibson. "They picked up where we left off when we played Webbers Falls last week. We hit the ball real well in that game."

On Monday, Muldrow had eight girls get base hits. In addition to Tate and Watkins, Click also had a mulitple-hit game with a pair of singles. Woods, Martin, Raygen Treat, Abby Doubrava and Andrea Lopez also had hits for the Lady Bulldogs.

Sallisaw was paced by leadoff hitter McCawley. The senior outfielder batted 3-for-4 with three singles. Freshman Erin Turner went 2-for-3 while Sanders, Covington, Erica Robertson and Duvall had one hit apiece.

The Lady Diamonds, who went 3-4 at the Oktaha tournament last week, dropped to 12-13 with the setback.

Both teams have now received their regional assignments for the Class 6A playoffs. Sallisaw will play at the Fort Gibson regional that also includes Idabel and Poteau.

Muldrow will try to earn a return trip to the state tourney when the Lady Bulldogs travel to Jenks next week along with Coweta and Owasso.
