A large contingent of Sequoyah County athletes will be in action this week at the annual Oklahoma Coaches Association/McDonald's All-State Games.

Sallisaw, Muldrow, Vian and Gans will all be represented by recent graduates when the games get under way in the Oklahom City area.

This marks the 13th year that McDonald's has teamed up with the OCA to bring hundreds of top high school athletes from all corners of the state to compete in the All-State Games.

The standout athletes will be showcased in eight different sports: football, wrestling, basketball, baseball, volleyball, tennis, swimming and golf. The state's best trainers and cheerleaders top off the athletes who have been selected.

Muldrow's Luke Morgan will be the first Sequoyah Countian to compete at this year's event when the All-State golf tournament tees off at 8 a.m. Monday at The Trails Golf Course in Norman.

Morgan won the Sallisaw and Broken Bow tournaments and capped an outstanding senior season by tying for fourth place at the Class 4A state tournament in May. He will play for the East All-Staters.

Wrestling is slated for Monday night at Del City High School and two Sallisaw grapplers-John Petree and Set Cox-will be in the line-up for the Small East squad.

Petree made All-State by going 31-2 as a senior and making it to the state finals in the 171-pound weight class. He'll be taking on the wrestler who beat him for the Class 3A state title, Tuttle's Josh Bryant.

Cox was originally an alternate for the All-State team, but was added to the roster last week. He was the state runnerup as a senior while posting a 38-5 record. Cox is expected to wrestle at 135 pounds on Monday night and faces a possible matchup with Tuttle state champ Ryan Henning.

Tuesday's schedule will be highlighted by a baseball doubleheader at SBC Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City. Vian's Lyndon Smith is on the roster for the Small East, which will play the Small West at 4:30 p.m.

Smith was an outfielder/first baseman and twice competed at the state tournament with the Wolverines. As a senior, he helped Vian to the Class 2A state semifinals. This marks the second year in a row for a Vian player to compete at the All-State Games after Spencer Smith played shortstop last summer.

Football is the final event of All-State Week and will kick off at 8 p.m. Friday at Moore High School.

Kevin John of Gans is one of only four eight-man football players picked for the game. John, who twice rushed for more than 2,000 yards in a season, is listed as a running back on the East roster.

Three girls from Sequoyah County will be cheering on the athletes this week as members of the All-State cheerleading squad. Muldrow's Ki Matlock, Sallisaw's Annie Hadley and Vian's Katie Horn will all cheer for the East squad.

Another local girl, Anna Herndon of Sallisaw, is in the running for All-State queen. The queen will be announced at halftime of Friday night's football game.
