At the May 19 meeting of the Sallisaw School Board, the board honored student achievements and hired various personnel.

Students honored for various accomplishments included Shelby Stavely, Maigon Sorenson, Bryan Dugan, Cody Johnson, the girl's high school slow-pitch softball team, Robert Raborn, Jacob Bartel, and Tyler Young.

In other business the board accepted the resignations of James Singleton, who has accepted a teaching and coaching position in Muskogee, and Betty Walker, Liberty faculty member who is retiring after a 37-year teaching career.

The board approved Municipal Accounting Software for the 2008-9 school year, the 2008-9 professional development, Comprehensive Local Education Plan and school-wide plan update, and temporary appropriations for the 2008-9 school year.

The board also approved the purchase of a home next to Liberty Elementary School for possible future expansion, and the summer reading academy and reading sufficiency program.

After an executive session the board hired David Steinberg as middle school math teacher, Ilona Jones as a reading specialist, 10 full-time and four part-time teachers for the summer reading academy on extra-duty contract, the 2008-9 support personnel and the summer maintenance crew. The board also hired Lewis Walkingstick and Dale Crittenden as high school social studies teachers, Robert Luttmer as high school science teacher and Jennifer Luttmer as elementary teacher.
