Department of Public Safety (DPS) officials recently reported a decrease in traffic fatalities for the month of April for the state. Fatalities for April were down nine, for a total of 51, compared to 60 in the same month last year.

Five of the fatality victims were passengers, one was a bicyclist, five were pedestrians, and five were motorcyclists. The highest daily numbers include 10 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. There were six days in April with no traffic fatalities.

Eleven of the vehicle crashes were alcohol-related, in the opinion of the investigating state, county or municipal officer. There were 38 male and 13 female victims. Forty-nine of the victims were Oklahoma residents, while two were not.

Ten of the victims were 20 years old or under. The leading number of deaths by age group were 11 in the 21- to 30-year-old category and 10 in the 41- to 50-year-old category.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
