A rural Muldrow man was charged Friday in connection with an alleged sexual assault, but the man told police that the sexual encounter was consensual.

Matthew Coleman, 29, was charged Friday with forcible sodomy and first-degree rape, according to court records filed in Sequoyah County District Court in Sallisaw.

The 43-year-old woman told the Sequoyah County Sheriff's Department that the incident occurred on the night of March 5. She said that she and Coleman were at her home, playing darts and drinking. The woman said that Coleman asked her if he could stay at her home. After the woman's children went to sleep, she and Coleman were sitting and talking when she said Coleman seemed to "snap." The woman said Coleman made her perform oral sex on him and then had sex with her.

When Coleman passed out, a friend called her and was at her home to pick her up. The woman said that she and her children left the home. When she returned, Coleman was gone and so was an electric razor and a necklace with a diamond pendant, the woman alleged.

On April 9, Coleman spoke to sheriff's deputies and admitted to that he knew the woman, according to court records. He said that he and a friend went to the woman's house and they were all playing darts one night. The woman told Coleman she wanted him to stay. Coleman agreed to stay, and "one thing led to another" and he and the woman had sex. He woke up the next morning to the woman telling him she was leaving for a while. Coleman said he stayed the second night with the woman, but no sexual contact occurred.

Coleman told deputies that the woman was upset because she wanted him to be a father to her children. Coleman said he tried to talk to her about upsetting her children with so many men coming and going from the house, but the woman told Coleman that it was none of his business and started kicking and screaming. Coleman said he grabbed her by the shoulders and restrained her to keep her from hurting him. Coleman told deputies that at this point he took his clothing and walked away from the home. He said they did have sex, but it was consensual.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
