Both teams had defeated the other earlier in the day at the double-elimination tournament, but the Lady Warriors came through with the district title on the line.
"I've been griping all year at them because we only play when we have to," said Webbers Falls coach Mark Weatherton. "We coast when we think we don't have to play hard but it's time to play hard or go home."
The Lady Warriors sent Watts home by scoring three runs in the first inning and two more in the third. Kimmy Carter sealed the victory in the fourth inning with a grand slam for the 12th-ranked Lady Warriors.
Shelby Martin also had a good game at the plate, batting 3-for-3 as Webbers Falls totaled 10 base hits as a team.
The Lady Warriors were coming off a 2-1 loss to Watts that saw them make three errors in the final inning allowing the Lady Engineers to steal the win. Weatherton said better fielding and timely hitting were the biggest differences in the two games.
"We just put some hits together in the championship game. We had nine in the game before that, but didn't put them together at the same time," he said.
Webbers Falls began the day with a 7-0 win over Watts and followed that with a 12-1 victory against Midway before splitting the final two games of the afternoon against Watts.
One of the offensive leaders for the Lady Warriors was Courtney Terrell, who batted 7-for-11 with four RBIs in the four district games. Martin had six base hits on the day, while Ramie Toddy and Angel Leopard both had five hits.
The district championship was the second in a row for Webbers Falls, which advanced to play in this Thursday's regional tournament at Stonewell. The Lady Warriors will face Roff at 2:15 p.m.. Keota and Stonewell are the other teams playing at the regional.
"This was our second district title in a row and the second in school history," said Weatherton. "I'm hoping that we're starting to build some tradition in softball."
