A Webbers Falls man was sentenced to 20 years in prison Wednesday on a first-degree manslaughter conviction for the October 2003 shooting death of his girlfriend in front of their home in Webbers Falls.

Jessie Wayne Mendenhall, 46, was arrested on a first-degree murder complaint in October 2003 in the death of Billie Jean Branam, 40. Prosecutors filed the lesser charge after reading Muskogee County sheriff's investigator Tim Brown's report disclaiming premeditation on the part of Mendenhall.

Mendenhall, who pleaded guilty in May, was also sentenced to 10 years in prison on a drug count. His sentences were ordered to run consecutively.

Branam was reportedly returning home after the two fought earlier in the night when Mendenhall shot Branam while she was driving up to their home.

Mendenhall told authorities that "he just wanted to shoot out the tires" after their argument, Brown said. According to court documents, Mendenhall reportedly sat in a chair in the yard with a spotlight, assault rifle, binoculars, and a case of beer and waited for Branam to return.

According to reports, Branam drove to a neighbor's yard a half-mile away after she was shot, where she got out of her vehicle, collapsed and died.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
