The Sallisaw City Commissioners accepted a $209,000 grant from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for improvements to the Sallisaw Municipal Airport at a special meeting Monday.

According to the resolution, the project consists of installation of new runway lights, taxiway lights, and runway threshold lights, including lights, wire, ducts, regulators, and controls.

Mayor Shannon Vann said the city became aware of the grant and applied for it several months ago, narrowly beating the application deadline.

Vann said the grant is a 90 percent grant and the city's cost is about $11,000 for the project.

"It's hard to turn down free money," Vann said.

Vann said the lighting project goes along with the city's plans to expand and improve the airport.

Bill Baker, city manager, said the lighting project is part of major project on the capital improvements plan at the airport. He said the taxiway and runway lighting at the airport has been a problem for a long time, with some lights working and some not working.

Baker said if pilots in the area know about the airport lighting problems, they will avoid Sallisaw because they don't want to take a risk.

Baker said the resolution to accept the grant was a formality, and the city council already awarded a construction contract for the lighting project. The work is supposed to begin in 30 days.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
