After a one-year hiatus, the baseball teams from Central and Vian are both back where they feel they belong-playing for a state championship.

Both teams are scheduled to open play with first round games set for 7:30 p.m. Thursday, weather permitting.

Central will be at the Class 2A state tournament at Dolese Park in Oklahoma City, while Vian will be in the 3A tourney at Deer Creek High School in Edmond.

Central is making its third appearance at state in four years. The Tigers made it to the semifinals in 2005 and head coach Kevin Rodden would like to see his team going even further this time around.

The No. 3-ranked Tigers will face seventh-ranked Wynnewood in the first round on Thursday. Wynnewood is coached by Jay Vermillion, who played baseball with Rodden at Eastern Oklahoma State College.

"They're a quality team," Rodden said of the Savages, who are led by pitcher Duane Betts.

"He's a big, strong lefty and a they have a good catcher too," said Rodden. "(Betts) throws in the mid-80s with a decent curveball. When he's on the mound, they feel like they can win."

Silo enters the 2A tournament with the No. 1 ranking, but Rodden said second-ranked Washington is another team that could win it all.

"Washington is supposed to be really good. If we're fortunate to get past Wynnewood, we'll have Washington on our side of the bracket and they are the real deal," said Rodden.

Vian competed at the Class 2A state tourney three-straight years from 2003-2005, reaching the semifinals eachtime under head coach John Brockman. This year, they've moved up a class to 3A and will put the a No. 9 ranking on the line against seventh-ranked Perry on Thursday night.

The Maroons advanced to state with a 2-0 win over Alva on Saturday.

The winner of the Vian/Perry game will likely face No. 1-ranked Bethel in the semifinals, which are scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Friday in Shawnee. No. 2 Sperry and No. 3 Jones are on the opposite side of the bracket.

The Class 2A state championship game is set for noon Saturday at Shawnee and will be followed by the 3A final at 2:30 p.m. on the same field.
