MUSKOGEE - Tasha Shockey was the top Sequoyah County competitor last Thursday at the Hilldale Invitational.

The Sallisaw junior earned a gold medal in the shot put while pacing the Lady Diamonds to a ninth-place team finish.

Shockey, a two-time state qualifier in the event, had a throw of 37 feet, eight and a quarter inches to place first on Thursday. The heave was more than eight inches better than the throw that got her fifth at last spring's state meet.

The Lady Diamonds also got a bronze medal finish from long jumper Meghan Smith. The sophomore went 13 feet, 10 and a half inches to get third at Hilldale.

Shockey and Smith helped Sallisaw tally 20 points and edge Roland for ninth place. The Lady Rangers came in 10th with 16 points after sophomore sprinter Katie Matlock placed in a pair of races.

Matlock, like Smith and Shockey, was a state qualifier in 2005. On Thursday, she ran a 28.28 to place third in the 200-meter dash. She also got third in the 100-meter dash, running a 13.63 in windy conditions at Hilldale.

In the boys' division, Sallisaw was led by a pair of throwers while coming in 11th in the team standings.

Treston Wilson placed third in the discus with a throw of 123 feet, 10 inches. Teammate Jadon Turner came in third place in the shot with an effort of 45 feet, eight and a quarter inches.

The Jay Bulldogs dominated the meet, cruising to the boys' championship with 205 points. The girls' title was won by Vinita, which prevailed in two relay events and totaled 145 points.
