A due process hearing planned Thursday for a suspended Belfonte School teacher accused of swatting a student on the head was postponed.

Superintendent Lucky McCrary said Thursday that the meeting was postponed because attorneys could not be present for the meeting. He said the hearing has been reset for 6 p.m. June 24 in the school cafeteria.

The school board suspended Patrice Roberts, a pre-kindergarten teacher since August 1998, with pay last month after hearing a presentation by McCrary recommending Roberts' dismissal. Roberts is now entitled to a due process hearing before the school board. Due to confidentiality laws, officials could not reveal why Roberts was suspended.

McCrary said in May that the school was investigating a reported incident and he was meeting with the Sequoyah County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff Johnny Philpot confirmed last month that his office was called to investigate an incident at the school in which a teacher was accused of "swatting" a student on the head.

No charge has been filed against Roberts, according to court records.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
