Two men were charged Monday for allegedly assaulting a 70-year-old man while allegedly stealing beer from Wal-Mart in Sallisaw.

Randy Lee Bush, 25, and Joey Heckel, 24, both of Sallisaw, were each charged Monday with robbery by two or more persons and misdemeanor assault and battery in connection to the June 8 incident, according to court records.

At 6:10 a.m. on June 8 Sallisaw police officers were dispatched to Wal-Mart in Sallisaw after two males stole two 30-packs of beer. The incident occurred at 4:50 a.m.

A Wal-Mart employee told police that he saw two Indian or Hispanic men standing for quite some time just outside the east door on the food side of Wal-Mart. He then saw them enter and walk to where the beer was stacked inside the entryway. The 70-year-old employee walked to where the two men had entered the store to get between them and the exit to check for their receipt. When he confronted them, he told police that one of the men hit him in the left jaw and kept going, while the other suspect struck him with the pack of beer in the left arm.

Another employee arrived as the incident occurred and reported what the suspects were wearing.

Later that morning police saw two men matching the description of the suspects in the 500 block of West Creek Street in Sallisaw. Heckel, who was still at the home, said the other man, Bush, had just left the area.

Heckel said he had been home all night and Bush came to his house sometime around midnight.

Bush was later arrested for public intoxication.

On June 9 Detective John Weber was assigned to investigate the incident. He met with an employee, who showd Weber the surveillance video of the incident.

Weber later spoke to Bush, who told him that he did not know anything about the incident.

Heckel later admitted to Weber that he had been drunk and stole the beer with Bush. He told police that he did not remember hitting anyone.

Weber reported that Bush refused to speak to police again. He noted that Bush was wearing clothing that matched the description of the clothing that one of the suspect's was wearing.
