What began as a disturbance at a Sallisaw apartment complex led to the arrest of a Sallisaw man who police discovered had failed to register as a sex offender in the city, where he was living within 2,000 feet of a school.

George Michael Nottoli, 58, of Sallisaw was booked into the Sequoyah County Jail in Sallisaw April 12 on charges of public intoxication, being a sex offender residing within 2,000 feet of a school, failure to register as a sex offender, and being a sex offender residing in public housing, according to jail records. He was released April 14 on a $10,000 bond.

According to Sallisaw Police Officer Justin Smithson's report, Cpl. Jeff Murray first responded to an April 12 call about an intoxicated man, identified as Nottoli, who was causing problems at an apartment complex on West Ruth Street. When Smithson arrived on the scene to assist, he reported that Murray pointed out Nottoli to him in case Nottoli came back out of his apartment. About 30 minutes later, another report was made to the police department about Nottoli causing more problems at the complex.

After arriving at the scene, Smithson reported seeing Nottoli walking down the sidewalk to his apartment. Smithson reported that by the time he got to Nottoli's apartment Nottoli was inside.

Smithson talked to Nottoli, and reported that Nottoli had an odor of alcoholic beverage on his breath. While talking to Nottoli, he told Smithson that he was going to move back home on Jackson Mountain northwest of Marble City. Nottoli allegedly told Smithson that he already owned a home on the mountain, but stays at the apartments three to four days a week because he does not get along with his wife.

Nottoli was arrested for public intoxication. During booking, police discovered that Nottoli is a sex offender, but was not registered with the city. Instead, Nottoli was registered with the Sequoyah County Sheriff's Office.

Smithson noted in his report that Nottoli's apartment was located within 2,000 feet of a school and in public housing with children under the age of 15 present.

Nottoli was formerly convicted for sex crimes in California.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher.
