A Vian teen who was arrested April 13 for allegedly threatening a Vian School principal and assaulting a police officer was charged Wednesday in Sequoyah County District Court in Sallisaw.

Malcom Jamal Brown, 18, is facing charges of felony assault and battery on a police officer and misdemeanor possession of paraphernalia. He was originally booked into the Sequoyah County Jail in Sallisaw on two counts of assault and battery on a school employee, unlawfulness on public school grounds, aggravated assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia, and destruction of private property. As of Friday morning, Brown had not yet been released from jail.

The two charges against Brown stem from an incident in which Brown allegedly called Vian School on the morning of April 13, attempting to get back in school after being expelled.

According to a police report by Vian Assistant Police Chief Michael Thomas, Brown had been expelled from school several months ago, and had also been removed from the school's alternative education program.

Brown was apparently trying to talk the high school principal into letting him come back to school when he allegedly threatened the principal. Brown allegedly told the principal that he wanted to meet with the principal "face to face" and settle the situation "man to man."

Thomas reported that Brown's father called the school and told them that his son had recently been "staying up all night doing strange things" and told police that there were weapons in the home, but he did not think his son could get to them.

Police contacted Brown's mother, who was at home, and learned that Brown had just left on foot, headed toward town. Thomas said since police did not know whether Brown had weapons or not, the school was placed on lockdown.

Thomas later apprehended Brown at a convenience store across the street from the school. Brown allegedly initially refused arrest, which led to a scuffle between the officer and Brown in the store. Thomas' glasses were broken during the scuffle, he reported.

When Brown was arrested, he allegedly had in his possession a small pipe with residue inside that tested positive for marijuana.
