The Sequoyah County Democrat Women's organization will hold their annual picnic at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Sallisaw Creek Park on the city's west side.

Helen Edwards, present of the group, said, "Everyone is welcome and bring your lawn chairs."

The cost of the dinner is $5 a plate and the dinner will include brisket, potato salad, beans, a dessert and soft drink. Tickets may be purchased at the gate or before the picnic from any member of the Democrat Women's group.

Edwards said Wild Horse Mountain Barbecue, south of Sallisaw, is preparing the brisket this year. Members of the Democrat Women will provide homemade desserts for the picnic.

Edwards said, "We won't have a guest speaker this year because we have so many candidates."

All candidates for public office at the county, state and national level have been invited to attend and speak.

Most likely the county offices up for election this year will be decided in the July 29 primary, since all the candidates are Democrats. In some races with three candidates, the winner will be decided in a run-off election in August. The offices up for election this year at the county level are the county clerk, court clerk, sheriff and District 3 county commissioner.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
