The Sallisaw Police Department, Sallisaw Fire Department and United Blood Services will co-sponsor the first annual Guns 'N Hoses Blood Drive from 1 to 7:30 p.m. on June 29 and from noon to 5 p.m. June 30 on the bloodmobiles.

The bloodmobiles will be at Sequoyah Memorial

Hospital in Sallisaw.

"Sallisaw's goal for this event is a total of 90 units of blood," Tammy Moreland, senior donor recruitment representative of United Blood Services in Fort Smith, Ark., said. "To accommodate this goal, about 120 people will need to support us. This drive is scheduled at an important time during the summer because of the high usage of blood products we sometimes see during holiday weekends," Moreland added.

"The Guns N Hoses blood drives are fun," she said. "Your local heroes join in the fight for life and get many folks in the community to participate.

"It helps United Blood Services a great deal because during the summer months, it becomes more difficult to meet the needs of our hospitals. People are busy with ballgames, vacations, etc. and drawing blood becomes more of a challenge in the summer. It's important to remember that patients in the hospital still need life saving blood every day," Moreland said.

A special T-shirt representing this drive will be given to each donor giving blood.

To give blood, contact a police officer or fireman, or contact Moreland at 1-800-934-9415 for an appointment. Walk-ins will also be needed to prepare for the holiday weekend blood supply, Moreland said.

After an experiment that lasted several months, the editors at Your TIMES decided this week to end the practice of allowing anonymous comments on our website because most of the comments involve personal attacks and unfounded accusations. These comments do not add information to a story, or add any true insight. While we believe in the free exchange of ideas, it had become evident that was not what was happening in the comment section of our website. Readers can also become fans of Your TIMES on Facebook and may comment on our postings there. Readers are also encouraged to write letters to the editor to the newspaper about matters of public interest. The newspaper circulation is several times that of the web site, so readership is much higher. Letters must include a name and phone number so that we may contact the writer to verify authenticity of the letter. Letters are limited to 500 words and one letter per writer per month is accepted.
